Try checking out a book entitled The Victory of Reason: How Christianity Led to Freedom, Capitalism, and Western Success. The Protestant Reformation, an important development within Christianity, was especially important in developing the values of individualism, bottom-up political structures, and asking authority-challenging questions. And it ultimately led to the value of social tolerance for differing beliefs.
